Today I Learned Relay for Life Guam 2011

The Guam Relay for Life, a team event dedicated to raising funds for cancer research took off on May 27, 2011 at 7pm. Despite the torrential downpour that occurred several times during the event, hundreds of people showed up and expressed their support and dedication by walking / running laps around the GW track.

It was a challenge today for many photographers with the low lighting and heavy rain. However, a Project Guam photographer was able to get these shots through the rain to show the dedication and commitment the people of Guam have for the Relay for Life 2011 event.

The rain eventually stopped and the event kicked off with the American Cancer Society taking the lead for the Guam 2011 “Relay for Life”.

Half an hour later, a period of darkness and silence was held to remember those who succumbed to cancer.

Regrettably, minutes after the stadium lights turned off, a strong downpour of torrential rain hit for the second time.

Despite strong wind and rain, people braved the elements and neatly restacked the bags.

Unfortunately, the event ended shortly after midnight.

Due to the fact that many of the tents could not withstand the strong winds, participants were asked to stay at their own risk.

It was reported that throughout the ordeal, two tents collapsed while many others had their pipes loosened due to the unusual weather conditions experienced at the Mangilao field.
