The Guam Relay for Life, a team event dedicated to raising funds for cancer research took off on May 27, 2011 at 7pm. Despite the torrential downpour that occurred several times during the event, hundreds of people showed up and expressed their support and dedication by walking / running laps around the GW track.

It was a challenge today for many photographers with the low lighting and heavy rain. However, a Project Guam photographer was able to get these shots through the rain to show the dedication and commitment the people of Guam have for the Relay for Life 2011 event.

Throughout the event, ominous clouds cover the GW track and field.

As the first wave of strong rains (a small squall ) hit, people take shelter just before the official start of the relay.

The rain eventually stopped and the event kicked off with the American Cancer Society taking the lead for the Guam 2011 “Relay for Life”.

Hundreds of people join their respective groups and proudly display their support for the relay.

One of the organizations, GTA (Guam Telephone Authority), is seen walking here and showing their reason to relay.

Young and beautiful models also participate. These models are believed to be contestants for Miss Earth Guam.

Drummers hype up the mood for the crowd participating at the relay.

Some international organizations also participate in the event.

Groups also dance, chant, and sing as they make their laps.

While most people walk for the relay for life, others place special bags that contain an electronically lit candle located at a memorial section.

Half an hour later, a period of darkness and silence was held to remember those who succumbed to cancer.

Regrettably, minutes after the stadium lights turned off, a strong downpour of torrential rain hit for the second time.
Despite strong wind and rain, people braved the elements and neatly restacked the bags.

Light bags miraculously remain even as it continues to rain.

Undeterred by the rain, people continue to walk and demonstrate their commitment to the relay for life.

Unfortunately, the event ended shortly after midnight.
Due to the fact that many of the tents could not withstand the strong winds, participants were asked to stay at their own risk.
It was reported that throughout the ordeal, two tents collapsed while many others had their pipes loosened due to the unusual weather conditions experienced at the Mangilao field.

As security personnel watch, participants clean up and take down their tents.
